Opened in 2015, Hawaiian Style Surfing has quickly become one of the leading surf companies on Kauai’s sunny South Shore. With a focus on small group size, in-depth shore training, and all local surf instructors, HSS is able to provide a truly unique surfing experience. The owner, Josh Helmin, has been involved in the growth of ocean activity offerings throughout Kauai for the past 22 years having worked and owned businesses in Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, and Boat Tours. He understands that providing a safe yet exciting adventure truly comes down to just 3 things: learning in the right location, using the best equipment, and training with the finest instructors.

Staff Bios

Billy Quereto – Surf Manager

Born and raised on the island of Kauai, Billy is Hawaiian, Filipino, Swedish and English. Billy has been enjoying the ocean for all 37 years of his life and has been surfing since before he could walk. Billy has been a professional surf instructor for 15 years and loves getting to share his excitement and knowledge of surfing and the ocean with everyone he meets. He thinks of Hawaiian Style Surfing as a true family and wants to make sure that every visiting “family” member has a great experience, stays safe, and most of all is having fun.

Jamie Pacheco

Jamie is originally from Kailua, Oahu. He has been on the island of Kauai for 16 years. In his free time you can find Jamie in the water keeping people safe and in shape, teaching CrossFit at CrossFit Poipu, or with his beautiful daughter who was his first student and who taught him how much he truly loves to teach. Jamie’s outlet is the ocean and finds peace within it. Jamie started surfing at age 11 and got his daughter into it when she was 4, winning her first surfing competition that same year. When Jamie was younger he competed in body boarding, surfing, and Jiu-Jitsu.

Mayan Fierro

Mayan grew up on the Westside of Kauai. He learned how to surf at a young age from his father who was a lifeguard at Brennecke Beach. Mayan loved everything to do with the ocean. If he was not at school he was at the beach learning and enjoying all it had to offer. After graduating high school he joined the U.S. Air Force, where her served for 10 years. Mayan was able to travel the world but nothing compared to home, the garden isle of Kauai. If Mayan is not in the water you can catch him training or cooking new dishes. Surfing is Mayan’s number one passion and he loves to share that love with everyone.
