Hawaiian Style Surfing is a locally owned surf school based in Poipu on Kauai’s south shore.
We’ve been running surfing lessons in Kauai, Hawaii since 2015, teaching first-timers and returning surfers from our base at the Sheraton Kauai Resort.
Our team of competitive surfers and trained instructors keeps groups small so every guest gets real time on the wave.

We are based at the Sheraton Kauai Resort in the heart of Beautiful Poipu at Kiahuna Bay. With its gentle waves Kiahuna Bay is one of the best beaches in all of Kauai for learning how to surf.

All of our Kauai surf lessons in Poipu take place at Kiahuna Bay on the south shore of the island, just steps from the Sheraton Kauai Resort.
It’s a protected bay with year-round beginner-friendly waves, which is why we chose it as our home break. Meet us at the Sheraton’s beach activities hut and we’ll take it from there!

Luckily we have great waves to teach Kauai surfing year-round. On rare occasion there simply aren’t any waves and we will work with you to reschedule if needed.

Our lessons are conducted at the “ODD” hours of the day: 9am / 11am / 1pm / 3pm in accordance to our permits. Each time may have slight advantage over another, but as a rule of thumb all lesson times are very conducive to a successful lesson.

We operate 7 days a week. Our phones turn on at 7am and our Beach Activities Desk opens at 8:30am until 6pm daily. After hours reach out using our contact form.

Yes, certain times of year we may be booked up 2 or more weeks in advanced. Our rule of thumb is to have most of your reservations made for all activities and adventures before you even arrive to Kauai. Please review our health and safety policy if you have to cancel giving at least 24 hrs notice.

We teach beginners and intermediate surfer students in Kauai who may need a brush up on their surfing skills for an hour and 30 minutes before renting boards on their own.

Our Kauai surfboard rentals are available exclusively to guests who have taken a lesson with us — this way we know your skill level matches the board and the conditions at Kiahuna Bay.
After your lesson, you’re welcome to keep practicing on a rental from our Sheraton Bay location, with hourly and daily rates available.

Group lessons run with up to four students per instructor and are the most social option. Semi-private lessons pair you with one other student for extra attention.
Our Kauai private surf lessons are fully one-on-one — the best fit for kids, first-timers who want undivided focus, or intermediate surfers looking to fine-tune specific skills.

Our group surf lessons in Kauai cap at four students per instructor, which is smaller than most schools in Poipu. Keeping groups small means more one-on-one coaching, more waves per person, and a better first-time experience for families, friends, and solo travelers meeting new people on the water.

We don’t have a minimum age per se, however, we do require that all surfers be able to swim in open ocean waters without any assistance. Our younger friends from the islands who have been in the ocean since they were 2 years old may have more success than a friend from the mainland without as much water experience. Therefore, we do STRONGLY recommend a semi-private or private lesson for all friends under 10 years of age.

We kindly ask that you wear your swim suits (Board shorts are best to protect your legs). Towel, water and pre-applied REEF SAFE Sunscreen (**Apply at least 45 min before you get in the water otherwise it will just wash off**)

Once you’re done with the surfing lesson, please see the staff at the Beach Activities Desk to rent a surfboard in Poipu for additional practice time of a total of 3 hours:
- $12 for the first hour of a 8 foot soft top surfboard rental
- $18 for the first hour of a 9-10′ soft top surfboards
